feel the effects of the high

Mount Baldy.  10,068 ft.  Our first hike above 8,000 ft in a while.  We started the hike on a really boring fireroad but our conversation kept us entertained.  When we entered above the clouds we stopped to take a photo when I realized, I feel weird.  And not weird/tired...I feel high.  And not high on drugs....high in the mountains. We were only at 7,500 at this point so I wondered why, I, who never got elevation sickness, was feeling like I was stoned.  Checking our trusty GPS (thanks dad!) quickly told us why.  We had just climbed our first 4 miles and ~2,000 ft gain in 1 hour!!  My sausage like fingers and foggy head made me realize, we have to slow down.  I never doubt my ability but I quickly feared we would not be able to summit.  I couldn't have that.  So we stopped and slammed a G1, went to the bathroom, and 5 minutes later, it was as if nothing ever happened.  We felt GREAT!  Better than great, we almost felt like running.  But let's not get too crazy, we didn't.We crushed the hike and made it to summit....which still had snow!

We began our steep decent and stopped to watch a rescue chopper for an unfortunate hiker....

Beautiful day.  But don't we always have that in SoCal?!

Conclusion of this day....the tape is no longer doing me justice, I need a new pair of boots before my next hike this weekend....

"what does it feel like when time stands still?" what is it that you are doing in those moments? what does it look like...FEEL like? who is at your side? on your mind? in your heart?

"it's worth the scrapes and sweat for the soul surge that follows" has pretty much been our motto since we first became 'us'...and probably even since I became me and he became him. it's in everything we do. it's the air we breathe and the love we share.

I first saw that quote in a scrapbook that casey made for me when we were ‘dating’.  I am so lucky to be with such a thoughtful romantic to even think of such a thing, let alone put a ton of time and effort into it.  Magazine cutout letters jumped off the page and completely filled my soul.  It was in that moment that I completely knew he was the one I would spend the rest of my life with.

Its worth the scrapes and sweat….the excitement and exhaustion we go through, scrambling around the challenges of a hike, of our lives…climbing the peaks and valleys….forming and losing relationships…crying and laughing….learning and growing….for the sweet soul surge that follows....sitting at the summit, tired yet completely accomplished, the high of life, looking back, while looking forward….looking at my heart, my soul, my world sitting right next to me- smiling back at me and feeling the exact same thing.
